Scuba Diving - The Best Fitness Program Ever
These days you can find all sorts of fitness programs in books, sports magazines and even on the Internet but there are no more than five good programs available for scuba divers and of these four out of five are almost the same, the routines are very similar.
After doing some serious research on what could be the best fitness program for a scuba diver, I found Crossfit and I think is the best. Why? As defined in their website, Crossfit is a core strength and conditioning program. This program is used to train police and military departments across the world, what is more interesting; I also found that the Navy Seals use this program as one the main fitness programs for their scuba divers.
I started my research looking for some fitness programs specialized in the abdominal area because I think that the abs muscles are the key elements in order to practice any sport at a decent level, but after reading all the information about the Crossfit program I think I was completely wrong by trying to isolate the abs from the rest of the body. The human body is an amazing structure of interconnected systems, so why try to train only isolated areas of the body. You will find that most of the fitness programs for scuba divers divide the exercises in upper body, lower body and abs; still most of the authors of books about scuba diving fitness suggest this type of routines.
Crossfit is a program that for sure will help any scuba diver to reach an above average physical level, because it is not a specialized or focused fitness program, I also think it will be easy to stick to the program, since is not the same routine week after week. Usually most of us, start new routines with all the enthusiasm of the world, but (here comes the big but) in the same way that eating the same food every single day or week is going to be boring at some point, fitness routines are very unexciting after some weeks of the same.
Crossfit offers an amazing combination of exercises designed to improve the condition of your body in ten different areas: cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.
As a scuba diver in good shape you will reduce you air (or mix) consumption, increase your back strength, minimize or eliminate foot and calves cramps, and moreover you will truly enjoy your scuba diving time.
As a final note, I am not affiliated in any way with Crossfit, I found that this is a select group of people that is getting all the benefits of this physical program, and I just want to spread the word.
